Automatic transfer switches (ATS) are used in applications with a backup power source to guarantee the continuity of power supply. They transfer loads from An automatic transfer switch measures the voltage level and frequency of the primary and backup (emergency) lines. According to these measurements, the load is connected to the appropriate power source. Usually, the primary power source is the utility grid backup power source is a generator set.
In normal conditions, the load is fed by the utility grid. If there is a power outage, the ATS detects the voltage fault in the primary line and sends a start-up command to the genset. When the genset is operational and voltage is available in the backup line, the ATS transfers the load from the utility grid to the genset. The genset supplies power to the load during the outage period. As soon as the power is available from the utility grid, the ATS detects the voltage in the primary line and transfers the load back. After a successful retransfer the ATS sends a stop signal to the genset.
